Founded by the Romans in AD 71 as ‘Eboracum’, York became – and still is – the capital in the north of the Church of England. In Medieval times York was a major centre of commerce (wool), though in the 19th century it prospered through sweet manufacture and was a centre for railway travel. This century York has moved to a more service-based economy i.e. health provision and tourism, as well as boasting a world class university.
We provide Coach hire in York and the surrounding areas. Archaeologists believe Mesolithic people were living around York up to 1400 years ago – possibly settled permanently. You and your friends/family find history compelling? Why not hire a coach and investigate – York Minster is a must-see? Why? Read on!
When the Romans first invaded Britain the tribe occupying the York region was called the ‘Brigantes’. This area was held as a client state of the Romans, but later, when the Brigantes became more rebellious, the 9th Legion was sent across the Humber to subdue them.
They beat the Brigantes in battle and built a fortress above the River Ouse close to its meeting place with the River Foss. The wooden fortress – later rebuilt in stone by the 6th Legion – slept 6,000 soldiers. Even with larger parties, our 12 seater minibus hire York service is ideal. Excavations under the foundations of the York Minster itself have shown the headquarters or ‘Principia’ are beneath, complete with Roman columns.

Constantine the First died in York and his son was declared Emperor by the troops. In 311 AD the bishop of York was sent to Arles in France representing York Christians. By 400 AD York, situated between 2 rivers as it is, was enduring floods – though the Roman ‘colonia’ and fortress were safer on high ground. King Edwin of Northumberland made York his principal city in the 7th century. The Venerable Bede tells us the first wooden minster church was built for Edwin’s baptism.
The current St. Peter’s school in York was established in 627 AD by Alcuin of York who was a chief advisor to Charlemagne. In the 9th century the Vikings arrived! They made York a major trading port. Eric Bloodaxe ruled an independent ‘Jorvik’ but was unseated by King Eadred as part of the process of finally bringing England together as a unified country.
The Norman Conquest – as everybody knows – was in 1066 – but just 2 years later the people of York led a rebellion. William the Conqueror, however, suppressed the uprising with brutal efficiency. We were very pleased with the service we received. Our home is not easy to find but the driver had left plenty of time to follow our instructions when he phoned for help. He was very friendly and helpful. We will definitely use and recommend this company again especially for groups of 6 and above.

My family were going out to Christmas dinner on Christmas Day. The price was fantastic to take 10 of us out including multiple pick up and drop offs. The driver Atif was extremely pleasant, prompt and accommodating. Highly recommend and will definitely use them again. Kind Regards, Stephanie International Business Manager.
